Nerve damage treatment?

What can treat nerve damage besides pain medication or other medications that often have many side affects? I know of acupuncture, but the thing is my insurance does not cover it . Any suggestions please? The reason I am asking this is because many different types of diseases run in my family and i don't want taking certain medications to raise my risk of contracting anything.
