Does acupuncture give effective pain relief for post-surgical pain?

My friend needs surgery for her back. Being an ex-drug addict (clean 20yrs) she doesn't want to use morphine for pain. She is currently getting mild relief with a TENS device but this will not provide her with what she would need for post-surgical pain following back surgery. Does acupuncture provide good pain relief for this type of pain? What other non-drug pain relief could help?
